“I think hell is something you carry around with you. Not somewhere you go.”
- Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 4: Season of Mists
“Fairy tales are more than true: Not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
- Neil Gaiman, Coraline
“Sometime you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.”
- Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections
"Stories may well be lies, but they are good lies that say true things”
- Neil Gaiman
"Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot."
- Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 3: Dream Country
"It's like the people who believe they'll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn't work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you. If you see what I mean."
- Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book
"It may help to understand human affairs to be clear that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people.”
"Nobody looks like what they really are on the inside. You don’t. I don’t. People are much more complicated than that. It’s true of everybody.”
- Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane
"You've a good heart. Sometimes that's enough to see you safe wherever you go. But mostly, it's not."
- Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere
"I like the stars. It's the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they're always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend...I can pretend that things last. I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don't last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend..."
- Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 7: Brief Lives
"Even nothing cannot last forever."
- Neil Gaiman, American Gods
"There's never been a true war that wasn't fought between two sets of people who were certain they were in the right. The really dangerous people believe they are doing whatever they are doing solely and only because it is without question the right thing to do. And that is what makes them dangerous."
- Neil Gaiman, American Gods
